WHAT IS PRE-SPEECH AND LANGUAGE
THERAPIES?
This course is aimed at students interested in pursuing a
career in Speech and Language Therapy. Students who
undertake this one-year course in Pre-Speech and Language
Therapy will gain an understanding of the application of a
wide range of communication styles and codes in relation
to speech and language therapy practice. The programme is
designed to ensure that students gain the knowledge, skills
and values to meet the demands and challenges of working
within the healthcare profession.
Students will develop an understanding of the role of the
Speech and Language Therapist in assessing, diagnosing
and treatment of people with communication difficulties in
a variety of settings including local health centres, hospitals
and schools. Speech and language therapists provide lifechanging treatment, support and care for children and
adults who have difficulties with communication, eating,
drinking and swallowing and help people who, for physical
or psychological reasons, have problems speaking and
communicating.
Students will gain an insight into various clinical settings
and the implementation of client care and patient handling.
Students will gain the skills needed by the HSE to work in
the healthcare sector, which will help them to understand
therapy programmes and support clients.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
This course enables graduates to progress to related level
8 degrees and then to the level 9 Speech and Language
Therapy in universities such as UL. There are many
progression options for students to study Speech and
Language Therapy in the UK. Graduates may also apply for
several other related level 7 and 8 degrees in universities
or Institutes of Technology or private colleges around the
country.
Mature students are eligible to apply for Speech and
Language Therapy degrees in all universities. Students
can also use their qualification to work as a Speech and
Language Therapy Assistant within the HSE or use the
programme as a foundation for further study in the area of
childcare, social care and health care.
Progression Support
Successful graduates may gain employment in the
HSE or with private health service providers.

Speech and Language Therapy degree programme
in Ulster University, the fees of which are covered
by the NHS.
• Mature students can apply for Speech and
Language Therapy undergraduate degree
programmes in Ireland or UK.

• Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied or;
• Mature Students or;
• Other equivalent qualifications

previous qualifications.
