WHAT IS EDUCATION AND TRAINING?
Students on Education and Training courses at Dunboyne
College benefi t from close links with Maynooth University
and can access a range of academic and student supports
across both campuses.
Our one-year course, similar to our other arts programme,
aims to prepare students for entrance into Arts
programmes in Irish universities and colleges but also lay
foundations for those who want to pursue a career as either
a primary or post-primary teacher. While the course also
prepares students for entry to employment in a range of
settings, it is mainly aimed at those who want to pursue
careers in the education and training arena.
By progressing to an arts degree or education and training
qualification and then on to a post graduate qualification,
students can access the many opportunities in the world
of education and training. This course basically lays the
foundation for those who know education is their first
choice of career.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
There are now over 175 places in First Arts in Maynooth,
30 places in UCD as well as numerous places in Universities
including DCU, UCC and a large range of other degree
courses available in universities for students who hold
a QQI qualification in Education and Training. There
are also opportunities in education, training, European
administration, as well as, in the business world. Graduates
from this course may gain entry to the BSc Education and
Training at DCU.
While there is no direct link to primary teaching from QQI,
students on completion of the Level 5 award, may apply
through the CAO for a range of available courses as part
of the newly expanded QQI Links scheme. These include
Education Studies and Early Childhood Studies at Marino
Institute of Education, Post-Primary Teacher Education at
DCU and Arts Degrees at DCU, Maynooth and UCD. There
are also a large range of other degree courses available in
universities throughout the country.
On successful completion of an undergraduate degree,
students can then apply for the Postgraduate Masters in
Education (PME) which enables them to qualify as a primary
or post-primary teacher and register with the Teaching
Council.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
• Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied or;
• Mature Students or;
• Other equivalent qualifications
All applicants will be interviewed regardless of
previous qualifications.

Developmental work is currently underway to
implement direct and guaranteed pathways into the
teacher-training programmes in Maynooth University
and other Higher Education Institutions including the
Maynooth University Level 6, ‘Think about Teaching,’
Foundation Certificate.
Currently, students attend classes on-campus in
Maynooth University one day per week in partnership
with the university’s, ‘Turn to Teaching Programme,’ and
Maynooth Access Programme.
