Introduction to Patchwork & Quilting
Course Description:
Our introduction course to patchwork and quilting teaches the learner how to design, measure, cut, press seams, follow seam allowance guides and sew a basic block patchwork quilt. Learners must have a good knowledge of the sewing machine.
The following skills will be covered:
- Introduction to patchwork and quilting (history, evolution & more)
- Tools used in patchwork & quilting: Sewing machine feet
Rulers
Marking tools - Techniques: Basic piecing techniques
Essential quilt blocks - Materials: Fabrics
Thread
Wadding - Process of making a quilt Cutting
Piecing
Assembly
The quilt sandwich
Quilting
Binding - Project Work Small quilted project: a choice of table runner, baby blanket, cushion covers.
Practical work will be done during the sessions and assistance is offered in choosing fabric for projects, ideas for what to make and how to use your advanced sewing skills.
Course Day & Time: Thursday evening 7.30 – 9.30pm

Tools & Materials required for Class:
Please Note: Students who register for this course need to have and bring their own sewing machines and iron to the class each week . Learners must have a good knowledge of the sewing machine. We recommend that if you do not have a good knowledge of your sewing machine to please complete our Machine Sewing for Beginners course first before taking this course.
The tutor can provide 1-2 spare sewing machines for class use. Please note that these machines might be shared with other students.
Rotary cutter, ruler cutting mat and pressing mat will be provided by the tutor.
The tutor will advise on the fabrics needed for class projects and where to purchase them.
Cost: €110
Please Note: The tutor will provide fabric for practice blocks starting off. However when students decide on their project they will have to purchase their own fabric for their project
Course Format: In class with tutor. Maximum of 10 students.
Duration: 10 weeks
